what i first thought as i was reading the article about the suv's is what the suv owners reiterated which was that if they have an expensive suv, they can afford the pinch. my favorite quote was
"I will keep paying these prices and driving my SUV, and the idiots can keep hating me," wrote Daren Frederickson of Vancouver, Wash. "But, if you cross the center line and crash into me, you will wish your Ford Escort was an Excursion!"
I mean, i can't believe they acutally HATE people, they re just car's...

I think SUV's are ridiculous for most people that drive them (i.e. my mom in her huge @$$ Jeep). But I don't hate them. I don't care if I drive next to them or anything. I just won't ever buy one. And my mom likes it 'cause she feels safe...so more power to her.

i do think the whole SUV big truck thing has gotten a little ridiculous. i also think a mom with her 2 kids driving an excursion trying 20min to park slanted into a spot is pretty ridiculous as well

but i think people should have a right to purchase the car they want and of course there is a need in many instances for having a vehicle that seats a lot of people.

perhaps a gas guzzler tax based upon the amount of dependents that are cared for by the vehicle could be implemented. the revenue could go toward R&D for more fuel efficient vehicles. but real R&D, not the BS thats happening now.

if you open up a car magazine from the late 70s, just about every car ad is proclaiming the cars new fuel economy. regular sedans were getting 30+ miles to the gallon as standard. there needs to be some sort of real pressure upon the auto makers to make some changes. allowing market forces w/ gas prices to dictate demand for gas guzzlers would be to strenuous upon the economy and the typical family (as was the case in the late 70s). if there was real govt pressure in whatever form as a need of domestic emergency i think things would happen.
