Last week, Republican Senator Richard Lugar warned Europeans there would be "dramatic consequences" and even mapped out a trade war scenario: If French, British or German firms cooperate too closely with Chinese firms and in that process resell American technology, Congress could, in an emergency, ban the export of American technologies to the EU.

It's a brave new world for expanding Democracy. As far as I can tell, there's been an economic armeggedon brewing between US and the EU for quite a while. Hello?! Why did the EU form a junta in the first place. Cuz the US was kicking their trash economically. China is very sneaky about their economic dealings and I wouldn't be surprised if they started playing the EU and the US hard against eachother for a mad capital grab.
Once the capital is firmly in place, and China's way of life heightened and secured, China turns around and nationalizes everything, does a hard shut of their borders and economy, then does a little jig.
Now, the only thing China is doing that prompts me to say that they might do this is, even in the face of great economic opportunities with greater economic openness, they continue to clamp down on inflows of external information and keep a tight eye on what's going on in Taiwan.
I have a source that tells me that China has banned websites hosted by Akamai (one of the largest colocation companies EVER!) and there has been rumor of China planning military strategy against Taiwan.
So, greenfield investors beware (my dad) China is putting on a pretty face to lure fresh capital into the country. But those sneaky Reds still have a mean streak in 'em and will grab your money and run.

china is trying its absolute hardest to be capitalistic and totalitarian at the same time. theres never been a country that has been able to do this over the long term (as in 50+ yrs). i recently posted an article about EAE and other arab countries that have seen great capitalistic success but remain dictatorial. but that "dictatorship" word should be taken lightly. compared to their neighbors these countries are considered liberal enclaves filled w/ sin, and the countries are basically run like businesses. similar situations exist in some southeast asian countries such as malaysia. there was a recent article from msnbc that i put up discussing this very subject of the small reforms that china has made but also discussing the many measures they still need to make. theyve definitely been flexing their muscle toward taiwan but i think the power of economic success is a much greater influence upon them. from what i can tell and the articles ive read it really just seems to be a lack of desire in the people for political reform.
the articles i mentioned above have this common theme with each countries populous. but i think as people become more and more used to a nice middle class life style theyll start to notice the freedoms they are lacking.
i think one thing people dont really mention much or think is happening is that china (as in the communist party) knows what is inevitable, but sees a poor example in russia and values security and the existence of the communist party as viable and powerful above all else. i dont think its out of the realm of possibility that the CP could be powerful and influential, that china could make very slow strides toward democracy, and that all of this could exist and take place with peace. i mean.... its really the optimum way to do things some may say.
if w. europe can be as socialistic and leftist as it is and still be considered free, i think that a china w/ the CP and some political freedoms/some minority parties and a capitalistic economy could be considered free. but of course there are many many measures to take, but things seem to take place very rapidly in our generation.
