Billy

So concerned is management, owning an iPod at Microsoft is beginning to become impolitic, the manager said. Employees are hiding their iPods by swapping the telltale white headphones for a less conspicuous pair.

"Some people are a bit concerned about being traitors, not supporting the company," he said. "They're a bit stealth about it."

How "stealth" varies from division to division. At the company's Macintosh Business Unit, which publishes a wide range of software for the Mac, owning an iPod is almost de rigueur.

I think the BYU honor code office should launch a guerilla marketing campaign promoting proper hair length by producing t-shirts with the phrase "Be like Kim".
On the iPod note, I truly believe that we will see the end of Microsoft within the next decade. There is no way the Seattle beast can capture the style-conscious technology consumer the same way Apple can. MS has a huge established consumer base, but Apple has a zealous following. Over time, brand loyalty will eat away from MS consumer base and add to Apple's. And that's the slowest possible death for MS. Apple has already strongly positioned itself to aggrassively attack MS' consumer base by introducing the Mac Mini. Eventually MS will be forced to compete solely on the back-end and gizmo market. Once that happens, Linux will strike the final blow and the beast will be dead. Like a stone cut from the mountain without hands....

i think theres definitely been a change in the past few years as far as computer buying is concerned. people know a bit more about their home computers now and so cost isnt the only factor people are worried about. makes me think of the car industry at the beginning of the 20th century and the story of the model T. though, i dont see the demise of microsoft anymore than one could see the demise of Ford towards the end of the model T's life. there have been some evidences contrary to the analysts that the halo effect that steve jobs talks about is a reality and that gives me a lot of hope. i wouldnt really want apple to take over the world but being more of a viable option for the masses would be nice. :)
