So it seems as though this Alvarez guy is doing the right thing, the only thing that can and should be done to treat any sort of terrorist activity, be it local gangs or international assailants. However, I'm interested to see what Bryan thinks; Are you familiar at all with Alvarez's tactics? Do you believe he is creating a stepping stone to an eventually safe, if not prosperous Honduras? It would seems as though he is moving in the right direction.

i think the VDH critique is the most enlightening and honest view of current events that I have ever read. I agree with Bryan that this man, with his obvious intelligence and candor, not to mention ingenuity, would make an excellent and formidable candidate for president.

ive never heard of Alvarez before. its a lot more complicated of an issue that just supposed terrorists in honduras that are trying to get to the united states. the article kind of touches on those other issues. one of them would be that...

some critics say that alvarez is just using it as a way to garner support to be more strict against the street kids.

this is probably not entirely untrue. the current president of honduras, ricardo maduro won on a platform of bringing crime down. crime is rappant, mostly burglaries. a lot of human rights organizations have been focusing on honduras and their street kids/gangs and possible human rights abuses by the police. this has gotten international attention. what they dont tell you is that these "kids" most of the time are 15-17 yr old gang members who sniff glue all day and have nothing better to do than go around robbing people. when they end up dead by the hands of the police its a huge deal because theyre "kids". im not saying its right, but these drug addicts have homemade shotguns, machetes, and are killing people amongst themselves all the time.

so anyway, if alvarez was just doing it as a ploy to garner support for the anti-gang movement i wouldnt think that that was entirely wrong. although, he really wouldnt need to do something as drastic as getting the US involved and riled up. he really has little to gain by mentioning supposed terrorists, except one huge benefit i could think of which is financial support from the US for honduran security. if he claims that terrorists are in honduras recruiting that makes the borders more secure. not only between honduras and other central american coutries and mexico, but the US/Mexico border. no latin country wants that. mexican immigration is already known in honduras for their cruelity to the honduran illegals crossing into mexico. as well, central american GDPs are dependent upon illegals flowing into the US and sending back millions of dollars every year to the motherland.

notice how he says, just wait and see. i think thats a very interesting thing to say. i mean.. he takes this attitude of well.. you can listen to me or not, no skin off my back. there was just an article not too long ago about how they caught all these arabs crossing the border into mexico.

maybe hes blowing some smoke but that doesnt change the possibility and BESIDES that... terrorists or no supposed terrorists.... we need to secure the border anyway.

i dont think the gang member they quote is really full of it either. i do see kind of two pools of gang members though. i mean, you got this one kind which is just mostly robbing people, hanging out... the lower down members. but then you have the leadership or other organizations that are mixed in with the drug trade and prostitution, different types of corruption. these are they psychos that are going around beheading people. but then again not really... some local gang members in an area i was at raped and killed a girl, and then cut off her two middle fingers so her dead hand was laying there giving the devil horns. a lot of those gang members are seriously jacked up in the head. i dont know.. theyre not all that psycho, drew was friends with some. but anyway... yeah.. i dont have anywhere near as much sympathy for these "kids" as do the human rights organizations and i think that we need to do something about the border problem anyways regardless of terrorists. its a big mess that both political parties dont have the balls to do anything REAL about.
